The central lawn will be used for passive and active recreation, including sitting under a tree to read a book or passing a soccer ball between friends. Surrounding the lawn are a barbecue dining court and play area on the south, a communal plaza with water feature, and game court to the north. A broad walkway brings people in from Kalmia and the surrounding residential walkways and connects them to the “outdoor rooms” and offers multiple points of entry to the lawn.

Seat walls, paving, and site furnishings have been designed or selected for their durability and flexibility. Fabric shade structures and a water feature cool the communal plaza to the north. Picnic tables and BBQs on the south edge invite family and community dining, and the adjacent children’s discovery garden gives kids a place to play and socialize. Benches frame walkways and seating garden edges to people-watch, catch up with a friend, or read the latest social media posts.

Urban communities in Los Angeles are deprived of adequate open space, but Jordan Downs is designed to invite healthy living through interactive restorative landscape environments. The project will bring the community together for activity and passive recreation, while also providing quiet moments to experience the natural environment.

BORDER has developed the newest green open space and residential communities for the Jordan Downs development with KTGY and Bridge Housing. To address the need for affordable housing and quality outdoor recreation and living opportunities, Jordan Downs H2A and H2B parcels will be transformed into vibrant living spaces surrounded by restorative gardens and open space.

In addition to active residential podium level courtyards and roof decks, the center open space between the buildings is envisioned to become a community gathering space for the entire family with social courts, multi-function lawn, seating gardens, and outdoor BBQ spaces. These programs and layout will give residents and visitors a variety of experiences and accessibility to a diverse collection of gardens for year-round activity and interest.
